John Reynolds ![]() John Reynolds About 38 in this photo, taken before the Civil War, Major General John Reynolds joined the regular army in May, 1861 from his post of Commander of the Cadets at West Point. In October, 1861, George McCall asked Reynolds to join the Pennsylvania Reserves, activated after First Bull Run. He trained at Fredericksburg and sailed to White House Landing near West Point, Virginia. Reynolds was heavily engaged during the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek and captured at the Battle of Gaines Mill while providing rear guard for Fitz-John Porter's corps. After a stay at Libby Prison, Reynolds returned to Second Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, where he was killed on the morning of July 1, 1863, trying to organize the vanguard of his I Corps.
