The Covered Bridge in Philippi, West Virginia was built on the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike, a major east-west road through the mountains of (West) Virginia. An early battle involved Union Generals Frederick Lander and Old Ben Kelley attacking Colonel George Porterfield of the Confederate States Army
