Promoted from U. S. 2nd Lieutenant to General in the Army of the Republic of Texas in less than a year, Albert Sidney Johnston was 58 years old when the Civil War broke out. The highly respected and popular general had been touted as a potential Democratic candidate as President, and actually out-ranked Robert E. Lee in the Confederate Army.
