Lock, 1855 Springfield Rifle

Lock assembly from the 1855 Springfield Rifle with a Maynard Tape Primer

The Maynard Tape Primer system, invented by dentist Edward Maynard, is illustrated in this lock for an 1855 Springfield Rifled Musket in the Fuller Gun Collection at Chickamauga battlefield. The motion of the hammer would advance the tape to move the percussion cap over a plate. The hammer would strike the cap and ignite the gunpowder in the barrel.
