Lew Wallace after the battle of Shiloh

Major General Lew Wallace, author of Ben-Hur

Lew Walllace, most famous for writing Ben-Hur, was in command of the famous "lost division" at the battle of Shiloh. Although he remained in command of the division during the march on Corinth, he was relieved of duty that June and was held responsible for the disasterous first day at the battle of Shiloh by his superiors and the press. During the battle of Monocacy Wallace attacked a force of superior numbers under Jubal Early to delay his advance on Washington, D. C.
