William 'Bull' Nelson

Former Naval officer, Nelson led Union forces at the battle of Richmond, Kentucky

William "Bull" Nelson, originally in the Union Navy (note the sextant in his left hand), established Camp Dick Robinson in central Kentucky, fought in the second day at Shiloh, and advanced to Kentucky to organize a fighting force to defend Richmond. Although defeated by Kirby Smith and wounded twice, Nelson managed to elude the Confederates. He was killed a month later by General Jefferson C. Davis in Louisville, Kentucky.
