Major General George Armstrong Custer ![]() Respected cavalryman who became Phil Sheridan's right-hand man during the Civil War, Custer died at Little Big Horn in an Indian attack George Armstrong Custer served as a lieutenant during the Seven Day Retreat, promoted to General before Gettysburg. Rode with Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864. Detroyed what remained of Jubal Early's army at Waynesboro in March, 1865 before being pivotal in blocking Lee's escape to the Blue Ridge Mountain in April, 1865.
