Major General George Stoneman ![]() Major General George Stoneman, The "Merchant of Terror" during Sherman's March to the Sea Cavalry commander had an illustrious career in the army prior to the Civil War. Under George McClellan, Stoneman languished in routine duty. He was assigned to duty in Washington following the Union loss at Chancellorsville. During the Atlanta Campaign Stoneman earned the noterity of becoming the highest ranking officer captured by the Confederates.
