General Edward Otho Cresap Ord

General Edward Ord, for whom Fort Ord is named

Born in 1818, Ord graduated from West Point in 1839. At the start of the Civil War he served in the Western Theater of Operation and was wounded at the battle of Hatchie, Mississippi. A corps commander during the battle of Vicksburg, Ord served in Louisana and the Shenandoah Valley before joining federal forces at Petersburg. Wounded again in December, 1864, its was Ord's forced march from Farmville to Appomattox that ended the Army of Northern Virginia's chances to escape to the Blue Ridge Mountains
